Der Freilauf (auch Überholkupplung) ist eine nur in einer Drehrichtung wirkende Kupplung und wird beispielsweise als Rücklaufsperre eines Getriebes oder einer Förderanlage eingesetzt, kuppelt Maschinen- oder Maschinenteile eines Antriebsstrangs (unterbricht automatisch deren Verbindung) oder übersetzt eine hin- und hergehende Bewegung in eine schrittweise Drehbewegung (Vorschub).
